It is amazing to me that otherwise intelligent people parrot the corporate line that its simply not possible to manufacture products domestically and remain profitable. Do people really think that $80 name brand shirts, $140 shoes, or the $2500 computers being made on the other side of the planet are being sold at a price anywhere near what it actually cost to make? C'mon.
Why is it every time a company moves manufacturing overseas, we never see a reduction in the price?
If Apple was just barely squeezing out a profit and scraping by, holding on by their fingernails, I'd buy their line about needing to manufacture practically everything overseas, but we're talking about a company that makes absolutely enormous profits.
So Apple simply can't afford to manufacture here anymore? Well, how much profit did Apple make last quarter, again? Haha, sure, right.

Think you're imagining it. Have updated my MB and i still can't hear the fan in normal usage. I expect it will kick in at some time when it decides things are getting a bit hot.
What I don't understand is that i only started getting shutdowns after the upgrade to 10.4.8 and it's associated firmware UG. And it seemed truly random, i.e. shortly after bootup (when the MB was still cool!) or after several hours, which is why I don't understand how a thermally expanding heatsink could be the culprit. If so, then it should always shutdown as the temperature rises to a certain point.
Dunno, just hope this new updater fixes the problem.

my battery is one of the one's that needs replaced, but the website won't take the serial number (verified by someone at apple) and tech support is clogged for the day, so hopefully sometime later this week i can get a battery sent to me. anyway, if anyone else goes there and has the 5 digit number in the range but it won't take your serial number be sure to call apple because it could be a website error.

haha I love all the people in this thread ripping on "FLASH SUCKING" yet have no clue in the difference in development costs of making most Flash Sites with html4 or html5 and ajax.
Half of the stuff Flash does is still impossible in HTML5. It may be slow in some area's but that isn't because Adobe is lazy it's simply due to the way the technology has to work to support all of it's features.
IMO Apple should take heat from this. They have no reason -not- to allow the plugin and have it turned off by default so users don't get battery drain while browsing the web.

I was wondering how many hillbillies and other country folk have an iPod. maybe Walmart is afraid that even Billy bob wants to download instead of buying from crappy WM.

Click on Configure and then Options...
I wonder if this is a specific to X86 hardware... Does this effect ppc based hardware?

An operating system is a big complicated program that lets other big complicated programs co-exist peacefully on the same system. However, Apple does not generate much revenue from software sales. If they did, it would be a separate line item in their financials and they would probably need to disclose more information about software sales, since such a large part of the increase in shareholder value would be dependent on it.
Same deal with iTunes Store sales, App Store revenue, MobileMe subscriptions, etc. Not a major part of their bottom line. Apple uses software and content to drive sales of their high-margin hardware.

If it is not a software company, why would so many software developers throng to their conference? You have to consider the problems that Apple has had with heat and portables of late. There would likely be heat issues with such a portable, which makes it even more plausible that Apple won't make such a portable.
I think this 10.5" 3lbs sounds possible. I don't think they would ever try to fit it with high-end proc's which would be like begging for heat issues. That Lifebook mentioned earlier is also running with "only" 1.2GHz Pentium M which I'm sure is enough for a machined sized that small. But 2000$ is quite a big price to pay. That's why I think this could be a place for Apple to take control over. But not anytime soon though.

As long you have the option to toggle it, I don't see a problem. If anyone can do 3D right, it'll be Apple.

there was a thing last week where tweetdeck's new app was pulled because it crashed constantly. most of the problems with Windows over the last 20 years have been third party apps and drivers and not the OS itself, yet MS got the blame. Apple learned a lesson from that. it took MS years to change the architecture to limit bad code from developers
Add the jailbroken iPhone hack and you've got a couple of good reasons for Apple to put on the Big Brother hat. I totally understand the frustrations and drawbacks to such a system, but apps for the most part don't totally bring the device down. A few may crash, but the phone still works and the apps get fixed.
If you like an open platform better, you have plenty of choices. Nobody's forcing you to stick with an iPhone (unless you signed a contract). I'm a geek, but I'm not geeked out to the point where I get all hot and bothered about OPEN SOURCE! Oooooooh! Yeah, Linux has been going with that for my whole lifetime and has its piddling little market share.

Looks pretty awesome, I've been waiting all summer for this. I'll be buying one for my wife as soon as apple stores have them in stock. They say today, but I'm guessing it will be at least a few days?
Yeah, that's usually the way it works - I'd say a few days is more realistic for a product like this one. And expect it to sell quickly. :cool:

Anyway, of the two NEW edition to the lineup, the 17" GMA iMac is much more important to Apple's well being. Why? Volume. They're going to sell ten of them for every 24". The 24" is a silver bullet machine. It's really cool looking, but I don't see many plunking down $2000 on a family computer. It's not going to really appeal to professionals or prosumers either because of its feature set.So you think the $999 model will be a home run? What about all those extras you get for only $200 more? Seems to me the $999 model just gets them into the store where a sales person sells them on the upgrade to the $1199 model.

I would pay 250. For somethings, Windows is the only viable OS. Like the commercial says, Macs are good for fun stuff, but PCs are for working.
What are the other viable alternatives? OSX and ????????
LINUX? Besides I use my Mac for my reasearch since I cant afford having M$ screwing me one more time. If you need 100% stability and security (as some professionals do) you go with with the safest system out there... and that my friend is NOT Win XP.

No, later CD builds were relieved of the whine. That wasn't solved by a C2D chip, but better quality control.
